“Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open.”
- BKS Iyengar
Here at Roots Yoga Studio, (formerly Sacred Souls Yoga Studio) we’ve been teaching yoga classes in Jersey City since 2015. Our classes focus on healing. Whether it’s weight gain, an injury, a health issue, or mental or emotional stress that's affecting you or you're just looking to maintain good overall fitness and health - we help you use yoga and its various teachings to help get you back to feeling whole and in control of your body and mind.
Our classes are taught in the traditional Hatha Yoga style. Hatha Yoga differs from other styles in that we generally move through postures here slowly. This helps break up any old patterns of stress in the mind and body and to help you reconnect with yourself and uncover the root causes of any mental, physical, or emotional blockage or imbalance.
Each class includes a combination of postures, breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation. All designed to help you go deeper within yourself and discover that inner silence and stillness.
So Let's Get You Started!
Founder & Instructor
Yoga was present in my life from a young age. I remember having yoga books around the house, and sometimes I would look through them and try poses, but my curiosity was not much more than that until college when I found myself struggling with daily stresses. That was when I was re-introduced to yoga by a friend. As I began my practice, I immediately noticed a difference in myself. I knew I needed to learn as much as I could about the practice, science, and philosophy behind it - and immersed myself in it completely.
After some time practicing on my own and taking classes with various teachers, I decided to get my certification and completed my Teacher Training course at Atmananda Yoga in Manhattan. I taught classes there for some time, then decided to open Roots Yoga Studio here in Journal Square, Jersey City.
With an emphasis on mindfulness, I treat my classes as a moving meditation. I believe that yoga is more than just a physical practice. Meditation is woven throughout each class as we move through both simple and challenging postures and breathing exercises to quiet and strengthen the mind, strengthen and create flexibility for the body, and ultimately, create a space to connect with the soul.
It is my hope that students who take my class leave with a feeling of deeper connection with themselves and over time get to experience the inner peace, clarity, and confidence that comes with it. If that is what you are looking for, I'm sure you will find it here !
Some words from my students
"Komal and Roots Yoga Studio came into my life when I needed it the most. I had dibbled and dabbled in yoga before, but never felt quite connected to it. That was until I met Komal! She has an amazing energy about her and gives you space to feel the moments."
"The studio's intimate and warm space, matches the demeanor of its instructor, Komal. Her gentle guidance through deceptively simple poses invite quiet exploration. Here, one can sit alone and focus and hear those thoughts running...and let them all go."
- Lisa Perez
"What a gem this yoga studio is in the heart of Journal Square!
A true sanctuary to practice a gentle form of Hatha Yoga for
beginners and more experienced students as well.
The instructor, Komal, has created a very comfortable environment
and is very helpful in the needs of each individual student as she
guides each class. She has an intuitive sense of what each individual needs and leads each class with a calm steady flow with slight variations from class to class which keep it interesting and fresh."
- William Charas
"The small intimate space allows for great personalized attention from the instructor. Very different from some other studios where you are lost in a sea of faces.
The instructor, Komal, is amazingly grounded and intent on your personal development in yoga. I love that each class is a fluid experience that includes poses, meditation, breathing exercises and relaxation."
"While I was going through a tough time in my life, I decided to try alternative methods to help me get over my obstacles and eventually be able to enjoy my life. After visiting more than a couple of yoga studios website's I came across Sacred Souls Yoga studio and something told me that this was the place. I can only speak from my own experience; I have not only found a fantastic yoga instructor but a beautiful human being. Komal is caring, passionate and her energy made me feel at home."
